Waste and Plastics Policy

I&J seeks excellence in every aspect of its business and is committed to being an environmentally and socially responsible business.

I&J is committed to reducing waste as much as possible in an effort to minimise negative and enhance positive impacts on the environment and society while meeting our business goals and legal requirements. By establishing and documenting our waste and plastics policy we are striving to make a positive contribution to the environment and society. We have developed our Waste and Plastics Policy to ensure that we act in a responsible manner.

Recycling
We separate all our waste to ensure everything that can be recycled goes into the correct streams. Staff are trained to ensure correct bins are used. All food and coffee waste is processed by an anaerobic digestion plant by our waste management company First Mile

Suppliers
We are working hard with our suppliers to remove single-use plastic packaging from the deliveries we receive and encourage suppliers to bring products in reusable crates and containers where possible.
• Vegetables, bread and pastries are delivered in crates which are returned and used again and again.
• We are working with our milk supplier to supply our milk in glass bottles which will be returned and reused. We aim to have this in place by 31 December 2022. Currently, we wash and reuse 30% of the plastic bottles our milk comes in and recycle the remaining 70%.
• Cleaning products and hand soaps – we buy refills from our suppliers and send empty bottles back to be reused. All our cleaning products are to be environmentally friendly by 31 December 2022. Currently 85% of all cleaning products are environmentally friendly.
• We are working to reduce or eliminate the need for vacuum packing in our kitchens and with our food deliveries.
• Our fish suppliers know that we do not accept deliveries in polystyrene. If this does happen we take the fish out and hand the polystyrene back to the driver.

Day to day
• We have removed non-PVC cling film from our front of house operations and are working to eliminate it from our kitchen. We aim to have removed all non-PVC cling film from our café by 31 March 2022.
• Any goods sent to us in plastic tubs get washed out and reused.
• We do not supply plastic straws. We sell stainless steel reusable straws.
• 90% of our cold drinks are in glass bottles and 10% are in plastic – all of which is recycled.
• We encourage guests to bring their own reusable cup for takeaway coffees and their own reusable container for takeaway food. We sell Keep Cup reusable cups.
• All our takeaway packaging is either compostable (80%) from Decent Packaging or biodegradable from Environmental Packaging.
• Our café is registered with Refill.org which means anyone can drop in and get their water bottle refilled for free
• To avoid food waste we encourage guests to take any leftovers home with them.
